OK – this is a romantic fiction story set in modern day Louisiana.
What’s it about? - The story is about Kate, a laboratory scientist, who finds herself in a bit of a work/life crisis, and leaves her home in Raleigh to house-sit in the small town of Sabine Bayou.
What can you say about the story telling? – I liked this book. It was instantly engaging, nicely written with just the right amount of description, action and dialogue for the story to move along at a good pace.
What did you think of the characterisation? – Kate, the protagonist, is a likeable 34 year old, bright, reflecting on her past life experiences, trying to be independent but also with a vulnerable side. Her friend Enza is a strong influence in her life. Andre, Kate’s love interest, came across as a strong, capable and independent.
What was good about reading this book? – I liked the setting of the book and could feel myself almost there with the description of the house, the swamp and the countryside, complete with alligators! I though the description of the dog and the realities of living with it and caring for it were very real and sometimes amusing.
I liked some of Laurens phrases ...“ ... and resurfaced in dreams that left me breathless ...”
“... My heart was hammering a hole in my chest ...”
I thought the sex scenes were sensitively written with just enough detail for the reader to feel the moment but not feel uncomfortable.
I thought Lauren wrote excellent dialogue.
What didn’t you like? – It was a novella, so it was short! I would have liked to know what happened in the end! There was nothing I disliked about it in principle.
How did reading the book make you feel? – I thought back to my younger days when I had boyfriends and how I felt! It made me remember how hard it is to make decisions about long term relationships. I liked the romance. I liked the fact that the issue over the relationship was whether it would be only short term – or not. I don’t want to write a spoiler here!
Would you recommend this book? – Yes. If you like romantic fiction, it’s easy to read, a good story and well told.
How many Daisies for overall readability and enjoyment?
